Approaches to participatory governance in culture

Kulturfabrik asbl
Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg)

The KULTURFABRIK “Aalt Escher Schluechthaus” is a cultural centre in Esch located in the buildings of a former slaughterhouse. The buildings are a product of the architectural styles of the late nineteenth century and the industrial architecture of the inter-war period. The KULTURFABRIK is an alternative regional and cross-border cultural centre. The 4500 m2 of its premises house two performance venues, a brasserie, a cinema, an art gallery, a ceramics workshop for autistic children, rehearsal rooms for music groups and theatre companies, administrative offices, etc. Ever since the KULTURFABRIK was started the artistic team has had the desire and ambition to make it not only a cross-cultural place to see art, for artists to live in and to create art, open to all art forms (music, theatre, exhibitions, dance, circus, literary events, films, book fairs, etc.), but also a place to train and to meet the general public (conferences, educational activities, meeting artists, summer workshops, workshops for young people, etc.). Unfazed by a world in perpetual motion, the KULTURFABRIK has created an open house for pleasure and intelligence.
